mark peter fraser

Mark Peter Fraser is an artist and 'end-to-end' jeweler who crafts unique and limited-edition sterling silver art jewellery.

This jewellery is about as far as you can get from mass produced jewellery. Every aspect of the work is done by Mark himself in his workshop in Cumbria - from the initial design idea right through to the final polish.

Nothing is outsourced. Nothing - other than the raw material - is bought in. If you buy it from Mark it is made by Mark...

Mark is happy to take commissions for one-off pieces, or he will make you one of his limited-edition range - each one of which is slightly different as each is made individually, and this also allows customisation of pieces to personalise and further enhance the beauty of these special items.

Modern Jewellery - Traditional Dirty Hands.

All of Mark's work is assayed by the Edinburgh Assay Office, which has been assaying precious metals for over 500 years, and is stamped as being solid sterling silver. The Assay Office also make Mark's mark (MPF in a rectangle) alongside the Edinburgh mark of the castle - authenticating the work and meaning that it can always be identified through the historic records held by Edinurgh Assay Office as a piece of work created by the artist jeweller Mark Peter Fraser.

Many jewellers outsource aspects of their work - for example the casting process to a 'casting house' or factory - but Mark's belief in the Ruskinesque Arts and Crafts philosophy of 'Craft Production' means he prefers to avoid the division of labour, therefore keeping tradtional artisanal skills alive and eliminating external limits to creativity. To this end he taught himself the traditional and ancient technique of lost-wax casting which he employs to make all of his individually hand-cast pieces.

Mark designs, carves, hammers, solders, casts ,files, sets stones, shapes and polishes.
